Notch was wild born in 1971 and was placed in captivity in 1974 at Kings Island in Ohio. She was there until they closed down the animal park and came to The Wilds in 1994.
Half-Ear was also wild born in 1971, transported to Kings Island in 1974, and then to The Wilds in 1994.She has been with Notch her entire time in captivity. They have spent the winters housed together. They get along very well but sometimes they fight until they get the routine of where their food piles are. Once they figure out the system they do fine.
Both females have spent summers with a male in pasture. Both females are believed to have produced calves in the early days at Kings Island. When out in pasture these two spend a lot of time with the rest of the herd which consist of five other females and one male. When the rhinos separate into smaller groups on occasion these two are always together.
Both Notch and Half-Ear weight around 4,500 pounds. In the winter when they have a set feeding routine they both eat about a bale of hay (35-40 pounds) and 6 pounds of grain. Last winter, their grain ration was cut in half due to them having gained a bit of weight.
Both females are good animals. They get a little grumpy in the Ohio winters, but should do well in the warmer Arizona climate. They are very manageable and work into routines very well. They enjoy attention, and like getting baths.
